Some children who are "left behind" are the kids who don't give a crap and choose not to make the extra effort they may need to make. School isn't easy for all kids and they need to find their own incentive sometimes to stay late to get help, meet with their teachers, etc. Some of these kids are the ones I saw in the ER not long ago at 12:00 at night with skateboard injuries, eye injuries, among other things because they were not home studying or, for that matter, in bed. I check my kids' grades online every day; I email the teachers when I see something awry and my kids ask for extra help or to stay after when they are "lost" in the subject. To have 2 children "left behind" it could be that something was not happening at home that should have. You have to be an advocate, enforce rules for homework and get school help when it is needed. Social lives, cell phones and 10:00 curfews on a school night don't work.report abuse

How many students graduated from Hodgkins Middle School four years ago? And, this is the big question, how many of those students continued on to graduate from Cony High School?

WHAT HAPPENED TO THE REST OF THOSE MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS?

They were LEFT BEHIND.

If they were lucky - they were one of the 40-50 students that graduate from Adult Ed every year.

Or, they went on to get a GED as many Cony Students have to do once they are LEFT BEHIND.

Some may have transferred to a better place.

But, many dropped out because they were LEFT BEHIND.report abuse

Was that the most important information from the interview with Superintendent Brown - we weren't ready for it . . . kids and parents weren't ready for it??? When did she know they would have to take the SAT for this evaluation. Why did so many other schools do well. Wasn't the old building once blamed for this too.

Perhaps the school board will have an informational meeting and explain this. Paying taxes for kids to be educated is a good thing, until you realize they did not benefit from your investment.report abuse

Nonny....waiting to hear all of your negative comments from Gainesville on how you would "fix" all of the ills in education....how your former principall did blah, blah, blah and blah, blah, blah and you as a perfect teacher did blah, blah, blah. Have you bought that plane ticket yet so you can go to the board meetings up here and tell everyone how they should be doing their jobs. Oh and tell us how you make the SAT's mandatory?? or is that just a ridiculous way to evaluate things when not everyone is on that path in life??? C'mon Nonny...where's your wisdom??report abuse
