Nonny--FYI-1 reading class daily in high school does not really work when taking 4 classes a day (for a total of 8 different classes every 2 days). Technology is being introduced to our children from the time they can talk, so why not integrate it into the formal learning process whenever that begins? And limit electives in.....art, music, or physical education? or do you also consider foreign languages electives?

Your last point on demanding that parents have their children in school daily is already the law in this state and frequent truancy can lead a parent to (wosrt case scenario) lose custody of a child.report abuse

Nonny-don't you have a plane ticket so you can up from Florida tonight and tell the Augusta school system how YOU would do their jobs too??? There is a board meeting tonight in Augusta and you should come to one and tell them what they are all doing wrong.

or perhaps you are just getting your negative comments and know-all attitude ready so you can post tomorrow when the Augusta article comes out??report abuse

Kids don't need technology to READ or do MATH. An easy and inexpensive way to improve the education of ALL students is to take movies out of the schools, limit electives (heck, drop the STUPID ones), require every student in every grade to take 1 reading class daily & yearly thru 12th grade (based on the child's level and not on some politically correct model of mixing levels), offer classwork/homework assistance after school & during lunch hours, make good conduct in the classroom madatory and DEMAND that parents have their children in school daily.

Technology shouldn't be a concern UNTIL the basics are in place and administrators, teachers, students and parents are on board! Yes, we teachers need to change with the times, but UNTIL the BASICS are in place and working well, nothing else should matter. This reading teacher has worked under a man who took a dead last high school (#14) to #2 in one short year with no additional tax monies!report abuse
