I question the validity of the numbers presented in the story. Having lived in a number of states in different regions, I rank Maine near the bottom for making a living and building for a sucessful retirement.

Mainers seem all too willing to go along with government giving them their pittance to barely survive on. That's all they have ever known.

And the republican who agreed with the premise of the story shows just how out of touch he is, and how easily he is influenced by the libs. The republicans seem unable to grow a backbone.

For Maine, there is little hope.report abuse

These figures are projections for 2008 and not actual data....Tax Foundation works only with census figures and with the economic analysis data.....If common sense means anything the per capita income is a compulation of all incomes and we must note that there are more millionaires (percentage of residents) in Maine and a growing number of people retiring to Maine. To have this news reporter just espousing the data from Washington D.C. without any caveats, is just wrong. To say that the per capita income (every man, woman and child) is $38,309.00 per year is misleading at best. That indicates a family of four has an income of $153,236.00. If this was true we would not have the low income problems and welfare that we have and certainly there would not be the energy crisis we are talking about. Data should be presented in the proper context and not be misrepresented. There is no indication that excise taxes are considered as the data appears to be specific to other areas.... I also do not see how the increase in fees the Legislature and Governor have imposed is represented either.report abuse

Deb of Augusta obviously has no real opinion, and is happy to live in a state that is running as one of the top losers on any list. But maybe she should be doing some work on the computer tax payers are supplying to her, or maybe her time would be better spent trying to figure out how to reopen her previously owned business, that was rightfully run out of town, so she can pay more taxes to the state she loves sooooo much and can be the PORN QUEEN once again.
Red fish did use sentence structure, but no spaces between sentences. When people have an actual opinion on this site the space to leave it is not enough so you need to conserve space.report abuse
