Stearns High School was once a basketball powerhouse. Nowadays, Stearns just ain't Stearns no more.

Sad.

Even Mike McGhee is sad about the fate of his old rival.report abuse

I wonder what it would like if Maine were a "developing country". Most likely we would have far lower taxes especially on capital gains, a public health care system, and the government would be heavily promoting science and engineering education as well as high-tech investment. Instead we have a state government obsessed with ever more entitlement programs, more retirement benefits for state workers and teachers, cutting state spending on higher education, and an addiction to rapidly increasing taxes. That is what you might call a state formula for low growth and low-paying jobs.

On the other hand Massachusetts has eliminated state capital gains tax for assets held for several years, has enacted competency tests to gain a high school diploma including recently a science test, has focused heavily on higher education, and has heavily promoted investment in new fields like bio-tech. At the same time New Hampshire has stayed focused on low taxes as their key to growth, and is predicted to be among the highest growth states in the country in GDP. Both states have made substantial sacrifices to help state business compete.

For some reason Maine voters and Maine media don't get it, and I would definitely put the Kennebec Journal in that category. Change is being driven primarily by large international corporations who are playing off one country against another using rapid transfer of technology, as well as free trade. Maine cannot compete for high-paying jobs with ever more taxes, borrowing and entitlement programs.report abuse
