What a wonderful program. Kids and mentors is a wonderful way to make changes for the good. Applause for this an other Winthrop efforts to make a difference in younger children's lives so that when they become teenagers they have a sense of responsibility for self, other students, their families and their communities even as this effort reflects a need and a desire to help others help themselves. I'd like to interview the following people for my fook on CELEBRATING EXTRAORDINARY MAINE EDUCATORS: LEADERS CONTINUE TO LEARN AND TEACH for inclusion in a chapter on Parental Advocacy and another in Community Wellness. let me know at nacelod@aol.com or phone me at 377-6251 and leave a message if I am not on my computer writing up other significant education projects in Maine and persons who influenced them in schools and in community. Thanks for this great effort. Donald W. Beattie, 245 Main Street, Winthrop, ME 04364.report abuse

KUDOS for the kids! It often takes kids to change the behavior of other kids. As a high school teacher, I just wish some strong, independent, brave, ambitious, goal-oriented kids would step forward and organize to show the dangers of teens and pre-teens engaging in sex. The stats on teenage disease, pregnancy, feelings of sadness/loneliness/being used should motivate both parents and teens to mobilize a push to make young sex unpopular and stupid (the latter which it is). Kids who want more out of life and who want respect should be waiting until marriage (or at least until they are MUCH older). We tell them don't drink and don't do drugs, but we don't seem to want to tell them not to have sex. How ironic and dangerous.

Perhaps there are some kids out there who can organize us stupid parents/adults and show us how to get kids to stay away from young sex...report abuse
