Nonny 1, here is a link to a story from the New York Times in 1993 that talks about Autum's family's experience in Lakeland. It makes clear that many people there were supportive and helpful, but a few others made life hard. I remember talking with Autum's mother, Terry, back then about the situation. It was a long time ago and there were many more misconceptions about the disease. Sadly, some of them still exist. The article is here: http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?res=9F0CE7D91230F93AA35752C0A965958260&sec=health&spon=&pagewanted=2

My heart goes out to Autum's family and loved ones. She was such a special person who lived her life with optimism and joy. It was obvious she was surrounded by love and caring. She will be missed.report abuse

My prayers go out to the family and friends of this strong young woman. Sorry to hear of all the problems she encountered over the years due to the fear that often comes with the disease.

I did live in the Lakeland during the time Autumn was there and I never heard of her (Lakeland is not very large). I also did a search on-line and found nothing. I was in corrections/law enforcement at that time (spouse, too, and he covered the north Lakeland area) and I read the paper daily; I remember no such harrassment and threats. In fact, we had people with AIDS on our caseloads back then and it wasn't a big deal. Florida has one of the highest (if not highest) AIDS rates in this country. I wish reporters would do their jobs (research) before being so eager to put things in print. I have no doubt this young woman faced hostility from some, but probably no different than what she would face wherever she went; there are jerks EVERYWHERE, unfortunately.report abuse

What a very touching story. My deepest sympathies go out to Autum's family. It sounds like Maine lost a hero yesterday. How sad.report abuse
