There is an old saying that the people who know the least tend to be the most vocal. Before putting in your two cents, please do your homework. It's not the fault of Maine citizens as local news anchors are reporting this incorrectly as well. First, there is not going to be a national ID card. The Dept. Of Homeland Security is simply mandating some simple things to obtain a State Drivers License. The drivers license will still be issued by the state of residence. Second, Mainers are concerned about privacy. There are two basic things that Maine has to do to become compliant. These are things that many states have been doing long before 9/11. 1) verify US citizenship with a simple state issued birth cirtificate in stead of simply accepting utility bills as proof of residency. Again, the issue should not be weather or not the applicant is a Maine resident or not but in fact a US citizen. 2)Match those records against the NDR (national driver registry) to make sure applicants don't hold a duplicate license in another state. These are very simple and not costly or time consuming. Again, instead of asking for utiliy bills as proof of resideny is just as time consuming as requiring a birth cirtificate. It's I have lived in four other states and they all have required lawful presence in the us by providing a simple birth cirtifate in stead of asking for utility bills. The latter is simply insane. Why would a terroist bother with trying to get a fake id? All they would have to do to obtain a Maine drivers license would be to get a cell phone and order cable tv in their name and then take those bills to motor vehicles. Proving you're a US citizen in by providing a birth cirtificate and social security card to obtain a state drivers license is more than resonable and most states have been doing this long before 9/11. For those of you that are concered about privacy, consider the info that is on your utility bills or even credit card statements that are accepted.report abuse
