The historically minded are actually all people who invaded Gardiner for the nice life it provided to the citizens. Only now they miss their homelands and wish to change Gardiner to their way of life. I grew up in Gardiner and the common was always a place for families to go, back then kids could even play in the fountain on a hot summer day. Why not just replace the outdated equipment with new safer equipment and leave Gardiner the way you found it.

By the way Rich the Local 2303 is a great bunch of guys with great community spirit. One can only hope that some day the Council and City Manager (again most of whom moved in from out of town) will appreciate you guys for the hard work you do.report abuse

Rich -thanks for the work that the Gardiner Fire Dept. does for the community, from the Halloween party at the B&G Club to the Fire Prevention week and parade/open house and the work for the common. You folks, if anyone, should know of the safety concerns it has presented in the last few years. Keep up the good work - it does not go unnoticed.report abuse

To Devildog and all others concerned:

As the current President of Gardiner Professional Firefighter Local 2303, I would like to attempt to put some minds at ease.

First and foremost, the generous folks who donated during our last fundraiser in support of the playground, we thank you for your support of us and this cause. Unfortunately we had no idea how contentious an issue the playground would become. A large donation is ready to be made to the playground as soon as the decision is made as to where the playground will be located. Until that time, the money donated will remain in a seperate account. I would invite anyone who has further concern or questions about this fundraiser to contact me. Thank you all.report abuse

Hey Brian and Joe- I've got an even better idea. How about we put a winding walking path around the OC Woodman site, plant pretty flowers, put up a big wall that keeps out the outside world, pipe in turn of the century period music (e.g. strolling Through the Park, Daisy Mae, etc) and let the 'elites' who hate children and noise walk around in circles there all day long!? In the meantime, those of us in the real world will put up a new playground for the kids. How 'bout it?report abuse
