Simple, in most cases, they won't even start. Unless your malady enjoys high ratings (high prevalence and incidence rates) and its anticipated remedy promises high returns on investment, the private sector is unlikely to take much interest in risky research and development efforts.

Even in "hot" areas like genomics, private investment only flourishes where there is a large publically-funded base.

Leave scientific and medical research to the private sector exclusively and you put not only your own family, but the entire planet, at mortal risk.report abuse

Ms. Violette, while i think your passion is honorable, i do not agree. We do not need to spend more tax money on any types of research. The free market has the ability to learn and create potential opportunities and answers without tax money. Let the privately funded researchers do the work, they won't give up.report abuse
