I have been going to and working in Augusta for most of my life. There has been very little change to the down town area. One can blame the big box stores but to be completely honest, the reason I have avoided the downtown area has nothing to do with what could be done to its buildings, etc. I remember driving through and watching a near porn show at a lingere shop. On several other occassions there was a man in a dress screaming his head off running up and down the street. On still another occassion, I watched a drug deal go down while I readied myself to go in and eat. I gave it up for that night and tried again the next and witnessed a cat fight with police intervention. Nearly everyday there is something rolling down hill toward the downtown business establishments that Augusta can do nothing about, it is not politically correct to do so. As for parking, well, that has never changed. There still is very little that is what I would consider safe. I parked on the river side one night only to be harrassed for a cigarette on the way out of the restraunt. I gave the cig because I was alone. I do remember a time when my mother used to do all of our school shopping downtown. There used to be wonderful stores there. Of course, back then one did not have to worry when walking around after 5:00 PM. When the mayor gets a minute perhaps he should do some observation and see if he would want his loved ones to rome around downtown.report abuse

With the chain of command aka my wind farm wet dream...........we can extend the wind farm chain from just out of sight of the Hyannisport Kennedy compound up the coast and into the mouth of the Kennebec. And then on up to the Winslow connecting bridge (ripe with a memorial of Radio Hall Of Famer Howie Carr eating a fried clam.........running that is...........with a head bandaged Ted Kennedy driving after him in a convertible with a screaming woman as a paaassenger!!!!!!!!!)
