The problem with the rotarys is that the rules keep changing. First it was the outside lane that had the right of way then it was the inside lane that had the right of way. Even the cops don't know the rules. The other problem is there is a lack of signs to explain the rules. At this point everybody is driving on their own set of rules, this is why there are accidents. The DOT needs to put up signs at the rotarys to make the rules clear to everyone driving, both Mainers and the out of staters.report abuse

I also took drivers ed in Augusta. The right lane is for the first two exit and left lane for all others. I don't see that happening. I get cut off all the time exiting down towards the small bridge. The cars in the right lane going same exit cut me off. Either they don't count cony Street as an exit or they just don't understand rotary. Maybe putting up better signs would help and it isn't just the out of towners doing this it people who live right here locally. Time for change do away with rotary or better education, before someone really gets hurt.report abuse

Teachermom. Since there are two lanes at each of the exits off both rotaries there really isn't any conflicting information in the two pieces of advice you point to. Follow either rule and you will be okay 90 percent of the time. The other 10 percent (perhaps, higher in the summer tourist season) you just have to look out for the folks who do not have the benefit of your local knowledge, or good old common sense. Perhaps things will all be better when Hannaford industrializes the eastside circle with a new Mega-Store. HA! Now there's a smart idea. Way to go Mayor and city council!report abuse

Nonny1 from Gainesville, I was taught the same...and I'm only 22 ;) Outside lane for one or two exits and inside lane for every other exit...and STAY IN YOUR OWN LANE WHEN EXITING THE ROTARY! If you are in the outside lane, you stay in that lane on the exit road! and look over your shoulder!!

These don't have to be as dangerous as everyone says...If people just paid attention to themselves and those around them...which in most cases it's watching others...and it's the out of towners that don't know how to use them that make them dangerous...no offense to out of towners, cause it's not their fault they don't know how...but that's just how it is....There should be a big green sign before each entrance that explains what lane to be in for each exit! That may help..report abuse
