There seems to be a complete lack of understanding by the trapping community not only of the lack of acceptance by the typical Maine resident of trapping but also of the illegality of trapping endangered and threatened species. To "take" any threatened or endangered species means that even harassing any listed species is illegal. When you trap an animal, you are committing an illegal act, regardless of whether it is injured or not. Often, trappers release an animal saying it was unharmed, or even worse, do the old "shoot, shovel and shut up". Reporting an injured lynx just is not done, or if so, very rarely. Therefore, trapping a lynx is committing a federal offense in Maine, but in the eyes of the trapping community, those of us who work to protect lynx are the "bad guys". Interesting logic....
Secondly, there is no longer any reason to trap, except in extreme cases of animal damage control. The view that it fine to capture an animal in the wild, later to club or suffocate it to death and skin it just for some aberrant belief that it is acceptable as "tradition" is truly living in the dark ages. The arguments that trapping serves a purpose in wildlife management is as overblown as it gets. Even beaver can be successfully "managed" using techniques pioneered by Skip Lisle, a Vermont wildlife biologist. It's time to get trappers heads out of the past, follow the law and join the 21st century, where, hopefully, brutality and cruelty to wildlife will have no part in our
beautiful state. Cecil Gray tells it like it is and, as usual, is attacked by those who are resistant to moving out of the dark ages.....report abuse

That is a stupid argument taxedmainer. Trapping is nothing more then a time wasting hobby where vehicular traffic is a necessity.
The going price on a Lynx pelt is probably somewhere around -$1,000 plus the jail time. Put one on ebay and let us know how it turns out Solid!report abuse
