Michaud cool to auto bailout

U.S. Rep. Mike Michaud said Friday that he hasn't yet seen the Democratic proposal to bailout the auto industry, but that he's not all that crazy about the idea.

You'll recall that Michaud, a Democrat from northern Maine, was the only one of the state's delegation to vote against the original $700 billion bailout of the financial industry.

After touring the Togus VA Medical Center, I asked him whether he'd support giving some money to U.S. automakers who are struggling.

"I am concerned when you look at the auto industry," he said. "Where does it end? We might want to look at the paper industry."

From his perspective, Michaud said it would make more sense to help the auto industry on the tax side, rather than the revenue side.

"We need to look at policies first before handing out money," he said.

He's also not optimistic that the lame-duck Congress will take much action on an auto bailout or other stimulus package.

Reuters is reporting that the Senate will begin debate on a $25 billion bailout bill for automakers on Monday.

That is fine lets not bail them out or is it help them get over a cash crisis. Are the politicians ready to tell 1 million people or is it 1 million voters tough it out. What about all of the people that work in the other industries like paper that will be affected and the sales tax revenues that are already feeling the effects of a slow down.

Forget Chapter 11, however, WHAT you implement and HOW you do it is critical.

Here is a plan worth a look by Congress...

Trying something outside the box like this, is the only way to save the U.S. Auto Industry.

... it deserves saving.

It is not the government's job to rescue any industry, auto, financial, or otherwise. Detroit's been making bad decisions for decades - they deserve to feel the effects of this, not taxpayers.

US automakers are in this mess foreign auto makers are not, why? The big three continue to manufacture a line of gas guzzlers losing a large share of the market to more mpg foreign autos, the UAW union benefits which adds thousands of dollors to the price of every vehicle making them less affordable, the reputation of a inferior product compared to foreign manufacturers. First, they have got to make the necessary changes in addressing these problems before any taxpayers money is simply handed over.

I Think Congressman Michaud is right. When is it going to stop.As i read other posts i feel that the American auto makers are STILL making Gas Guzzlers and forget about the Workmanship its the worst. And why should the American tax payer have to bail out the american auto makers there the ones that did it to themselves.

There was a report on the U.S. news the other night that stated that what GM was asking for was only enough to keep them afloat for two months, and they anticipated it taking two years to get back on track. Why should we throw billions of dollars at them to hold them up for 2 months when they don't seem to know what they are going to do for the 22 months after that? Let's make these companies show some direction and planning instead of just handing out cash. That mindset is how welfare in Maine got so screwed up. At least now that the oil industry has given them the shaft, the "big 3" auto makers might start cooperating a little more in researching and producing more efficient vehicles.
Bailing out these failing companies and people who are drowning in debt only teaches them that they can mis-manage their money and be fine. How about rewarding those how pay their bills on time instead? Pay off any remaining mortgages and credit card bills of those who keep up on payments. Then they will buy more and actually pay the balance, rather than fall behind on bills and wait to get bailed out again. Half of these companies and people getting bailed out now will be right back in the same spot again because they have learned nothing, and all that money will be wasted.

Why should our tax dollars bail out the auto industry? It's like applying a Band-Aid to an infection that needs either a high dose of anti-biotics or an amputation (management/CEO positions). Let's ask Exxon/Mobil, who has recorded record breaking profits to help support the industries that support them. If the big 3 go down the tubes, there goes the big American made gas guzzlers that support the oil companies. Exxon should be investing in its future by making sure that the American auto industry still manufactures vehicles that use their products, otherwise we'll be purchasing foreign made vehicles that are more economical for tax payers to operate and less economical for the Exxon's of the world.
