Dems tout Election Day efforts
The Maine Democratic Party says it will have more than 3,200 volunteers working on Tuesday as part of the party's Get Out the Vote effort.
"We are dwarfing any Get Out the Vote effort that's been done in Maine before," Peter Chandler, campaign director for the Maine Democratic Party's Coordinated Campaign, said in a statement. "In the past few days, we've more than doubled the size of our operation, from 34 to 74 offices, and we believe it's going to pay off on Election Day."
While a poll released Sunday showed Democratic Sen. Barack Obama with a sizable lead in Maine -- 56 percent versus 43 percent for Republican Sen. John McCain -- it will be interesting to see how (or if) the Democratic effort pays off in legislative races.
Republicans are hoping people who are "fed up with taxes" will come out to vote in spades to shoot down Question 1, the repeal of beverage taxes for Dirigo. Will that anger translate into a good showing for Republican legislative candidates?
Or will the throngs of Democrats working on Tuesday mean positive results from Obama on down?
