Hoffman now write-in, Dobson to court

The two unenrolled candidates trying to get a place on the November ballot in the U.S. Senate race announced different tactics on Tuesday.

After numerous court challenges, Herbert Hoffman of Ogunquit said he will run as a write-in. He blasted incumbent Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, and her challenger U.S. Rep. Tom Allen, D-Maine, in a statement released today.

He said his supporters: "have told me they want a choice other than the candidates of the duopolistic, power-and-money-driven, political system that now dominates and controls our life, our liberty, and $ increasingly $ our ability to pursue happiness. Because of the two-party system our government is broken, and it is only because of the strength of our people and what remains of our Constitution that our country isn't completely broken as well."

For her part, Laurie Dobson of Kennebunkport is hoping a federal District Court judge will grant an injunction to stop the Secretary of State's Office from finalizing the ballot without her name on it.

Dobson claims her rights are being violated because the Secretary of State won't accept signatures submitted after the deadline. She says municipal clerks didn't return the petitions by the deadline, which made her fall short of the 4,000 signatures needed.

Here's what she had to say:

"We are challenging the decision by the Secretary of State to refuse to accept our signatures, including those which were returned late by some towns, even though we sent them to clerks in a timely manner, as required. As a result, we were unlawfully deprived of ballot placement."
