Dems to hold Superdelegate do over?
Members of the Maine Democratic Party state committee will meet March 16 to decide whether to reconsider who should fill one of the party’s Superdelegate slots.
At issue is the position of Democratic National Committeewoman. In January, the committee voted to put Winthrop bookstore owner Rita Moran in the position because the person who was the committeewoman — Jennifer DeChant of Bath — had missed three consecutive meetings.
But now some members of the state committee say the election should be held again because they didn’t understand that an election for the position was being held in January.
For her part, DeChant said she did miss three consecutive meetings, but that two were due to a difficult pregnancy. She said she did a good job holding the position for three and a half years, and would like to be able to finish out her four year term.
Moran said there was proper notice given before the election and that there’s no reason for the committee to take another vote.
At stake is one of Maine’s eight Superdelegate votes. (Maine was supposed to have 10 Superdelegates, but the number was cut by two when it was revealed that former Gov. Ken Curtis and former Sen. George Mitchell have primary residences out of state.)
