1st CD hopefuls: Pay attention to me!
In the last few days, the candidates on both sides of the 1st Congressional District race have been cranking out the press releases in hopes of getting a little ink or air time.
With the June primary five months away, they are all working to shore up support.
Here’s a sampler of what they’ve been saying:
Republican Dean Scontras of Eliot is touting his “50 key endorsements” from “prominent Maine and national business leaders.”
His Republican opponent, Charlie Summers of Scarborough, put out a release to “applaud Gov. John Baldacci for recognizing the leadership of President Ronald Reagan by proclaiming Feb. 6, 2008 as Ronald Reagan Day.”
On the Democratic side:
Mike Brennan of Portland released a two-page agenda that he calls his “New Direction for Maine and America.”
Mark Lawrence of South Berwick announced that the Metal Trades Council at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard has endorsed his candidacy.
And Chellie Pingree of North Haven put out a statement on the downturn in the economy that blasts President Bush for his “misplaced priorities.”
Other Democrats — Sen. Ethan Strimling of Portland, Adam Cote of Portland, and Dr. Stephen Meister of Winthrop — haven’t put out anything in the last two days. But my inbox is always open.
That 50 prominent businesses are endorsing Dean speaks volumes of their faith in Dean’s understanding of the true root strength of our economy: small businesses. Small businesses are the victims of over-regulation and high taxes which eventually choke the life out of them. Look around your local town – what do you see? Hundreds of small businesses, all along each town’s local Main Street. How about all the trucks, vans and cars with small business logos driving around, doing business? The big businesses are somewhere in industrial parks, but those small businesses are the backbone of your community. Communities make up counties, counties fill the State of Maine. Keep our small business flourishing and the economy strengthens.
