Dog distracted drivers, police believe
No was killed, but at least one person was air-lifted from the scene of a five-vehicle accident on the Maine Turnpike just south of Auburn.
The accident happened at 8:20 this morning in the southbound lanes between Auburn and Gray.
State Police spokesman Steve McCausland said two vehicles involved in the crash were a tractor trailer and Brinks truck. The accident was so severe, McCausland warned drivers to get off the turnpike at Exit 75 and go south on Route 26 or Route 100, according to a release from his office.
The cause of the pile-up? A black Labrador retriever who darted across I-95.
Maine Turnpike spokesman Dan Paradee said a driver in a Ford Taurus stopped in the breakdown lane out of concern for the canine, and an SUV, an Impala and a tractor trailer started to stop behind her.
The Brinks truck, however, didn’t.
“From what I’ve been told by state troopers, the driver may have been distracted by the dog,” Paradee said. “They struck the SUV, Impala, and Taurus.
Both lanes reopened two and half hours later.
The names and injuries of those involved were not released Thursday, though Paradee said one person was air-lifted to the hospital in Lewiston.
“It is my understanding they’re doing OK,” he said. “It’s amazing.”
Paradee said state troopers at the scene advised him no one was seriously hurt.
As for the lab?
“He’s still at large,” Paradee said.
