Have a great holiday, but use common sense
Most people are thinking of turkey, stuffing and pie this weekend — not driving — as they travel to see friends and relatives.
The Maine State Police announced today they are using additional traffic enforcement over the weekend to ensure travelers drive safely.
State Police Chief Col. Patrick Fleming said troopers will be using aircraft and cracking down on speeding throughout the state during the holiday weekend. Highway fatalities are up this year compared to 2006, he said.
“Most of these (fatalities) are due to speeding and alcohol, and around the holidays, that becomes more of a concern,” Fleming said.
So far this year, there have been 164 highway deaths — the most recent death occuring yesterday. There were 153 people killed on Maine’s highways in 2006.
Fleming advises drivers to plan ahead and to give themselves plenty of time to get to their destinations.
“Weather changes around here very quickly,” Fleming said. “I would advise drivers to not rush and give themselves plenty of time to travel.”
